I Thought It Was Just Wonderful!
Mzuri came down to my studio one day and did a short reading from her one woman play, The Fannie Lou Hamer Story, I thought it was just Wonderful and I knew then I had to direct it….. I invited my friends Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson to come see it at The Raw Space in New York City. We knew it was a winner before she won the Audeloco!.

Wonderful Theatrical Experience!
Our good friend Louis Johnson directed Mzuri in The Fannie Lou Hamer Story so we got a personal invitation and took a front seat. What a wonderful theatrical experience from beginning to end! Thank you Mzuri and Thank you Louis for The Fannie Lou Hamer Story.

“Get Out and Vote”
Mzuri’s one woman play of the Fannie Lou Hamer Story is right on time! This is the 50th commemoration of Freedom Summer, Mrs. Hamer’s testimony at the Democratic National Convention and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Mrs. Hamer’s testimony precipitated next year’s commemoration of the Voter’s Right Act of 1965. It gave me pleasure to bring the play to Mississippi during one of my campaigns. I believe all who witnessed this powerful portrayal of Mrs. Hamer were motivated to “Get Out and Vote”!

Our nation needs people like you Mzuri to wake us up…
Presidents of colleges and universities are fond of saying that our students are the future leaders of our cities, countries, and world. Our nation needs people like you Mzuri to wake us up, to remind us of the work that remains to be done and the challenges still lying before us! Thank you for allowing Berea College to become the standard bearer and catalyst that promotes social and cultural change aligning with higher education’s commitment of excellence and which powerfully resonates with our institution’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth” (Acts 17:26)
